Sideoats Grama Prairie Grass

Not side oats grama. That won't bloom for a couple of months. It is a warm season grass. Are you talking about the one that has the red feathery tuffs. I know what you are alluding to, I think, but I don't know the name. Could you be looking at Purple three awn. They usually start blooming in the early summer. The other thing it could be is a fescue or a rescue grass. Really, I am only guessing. I loaned out my Native plant books. I bet MR. Smarty Pants at the LBJ Wildflower center would know

Mara, we have fields of the purple three awn here and I love the way it looks. Have you ever seen or heard of it being cultivated in a dry garden?

OH YES!!! You can get seed from Native American seed. LOOKY here!. They have purple Three awn and RED THREE AWN!!!! Maybe that is the grass that Lorelie is looking for.

Mara,thank you, that's just what it is! I'm going to try transplanting some and try from seed. It's such a beautiful grass!

If they are blooming now,they are cool season grasses so don't be surprised when they disappear or look sad this summer.
