Collect seeds from giant zucchini?

Planted from seed package, I don't even know what brand seed it was. Are zucchini hybrids like most other things these days? Are the seeds worth collecting? I don't know what else to do with this monster. Silly thing looked too much like a stem until it was huge.

p.s. I've been thinking about that stupid squash vine borer and wonder if squash would do better in a container filled with fresh dirt every year?

RE: Collect seeds from giant zucchini?

We didn't plant veggies this year, but have feral squash and tomatoes growing in the 6 ft stump hole I back filled with sub-soil mixed with compost. Progeny of the squirrel chewed tomatoes and Sun scalded squash I threw in the compost pile last season.

May not do well because of the late start, but looks like they're going to try to produce very similar to the parents. You might get an oddball, but if the seed is viable, seems like most would be similar to the originals for at least generation or two.
