Hi All,
We will be going on vacation soon.I have a scaevola and

and dry.Has anyone had any luck with the aqua globes helping? Is there anything else out there I can try?

I think they definitely help. Can you take the baskets down? Might keep them going longer. I don't know if they can make it 11 days.

But purslane is tough. Isn't it a succulent?

You can get a dripper kit and a timer. If you don't have a lot of pots the cost won't be as high. The timer will be the major part of the purchase, but if you can't find someone to come water your potted plants this might work for you.

I was unexpectedly in a wheelchair last year for five months, starting in April. I could not get out my back door at all. And it got REALLY hot REALLY early and continued to be really hot. The only potted plant I lost was the one the dogs like to run behind. They managed to knock the dripper out of the pot.

If you can't do a dripper right now...might be able to rig a timer and a short drip hose to supply some water for a limited amount of time every day. Might also help to take them down and move them somewhere with a little less exposure.

My mom used to wick her pots with some sort of wick pushed up into the bottom through the drainage hole and the other end hanging in a container of water. I don't remember if it works.

I've never used the aqua globes but I don't know if they'd hold enough water to last 11 days. I'd definitely unhang them and put them in a partially shaded area. If you've got outside faucets you could set them under and then provide a slow drip out of the faucet into the pots. If they are in coir pots type baskets I'd put a plastic garbage bag around the basket and put a small hole in it to allow drainage in case of rain or excess from the faucet. I've done this before on shorter vacations and it's worked well.

My 7 year old bought me some AquaGlobes for Christmas a few years ago. Their necks are so skinny, it's hard to fill them. I think, in our heat, they don't dribble or hold enough to work well outside. I had moderately better opinions of a product called Plant Nanny. They're a Terra cotta plug you shove down in the dirt then place a wine bottle of water upside down in.

However, if it's just your hanging baskets, have you considered just taking them to a neighbors house and asking them to water them for you?

Here is a link that might be useful: Plant nanny webpage

thanks for all the replies.I have just the 2 baskets on our apartment patio.the plant nanny looks interesting.I will see if I can find something like that this week.I didn't even think about the baskets until last week. It's a
good thing vacations don't come around too often;they are
almost like work getting ready for them!

I have used Aqua Globes with success while on vacation for a week. I put mulch in the pots too and watered well the morning I left. If you have a sprinkler system you can place the pots in the yard to help also. Everything survived.

I tried the terra cotta product before on hanging purslane and it died. Sorry.

Ask a friend to plant sit them while you are gone if you live in an apartment. It would be much easier for just a few things or you could just leave them inside in the bath tub after you water them. They won't dry out as fast inside and if they lose any leaves they would be easy to clean up in there.
