The best way to tell is let some of it go to seed. If the clumps are thick at the base it is probably a grama grass. Buffalo grass clumps are soft, not distinct and it spreads by runners like bermuda grass. In fact buffalo grass looks a lot like bermuda grass with different seedheads.

Do you remember the post from Granburyflowergirl last year, I think? About 1/4 of the page down, she shows a closeup of one of her plugs.

Thanks pkponder. The stuff growing in my backyard is nothing like that. I'll let it grow out again and then take a photo so I can try for an I.D.
