Brussel Sprouts in Houston

I'm planning to try to grow brussel sprouts this winter. I know, I know, not the best for my area, but my cabbage did well last year, so I want to give them a try. My problem is when to start them. I've read to start the seeds in July or August, and I've also read October. Does anyone have any experience with them in this area? Thanks!

I raised them in the last winter vegetable garden I had and didn't have a problem with them. I purchased plants at the fall Master Gardener sale I believe.

My vegetable garden Bible: Commonsense Vegetable Gardening for the South recommends planting 6-8 weeks before the first predicted frost (which I count back from the 1st week in December for far NW Harris County.

They definitely need chillier weather than we're having right now!!!
