How about something that will climb the wall, like pole beans?

I saw a show on DIY (I think) about growing small veggies and herbs on a slanted wall with compartments like letter slots almost, just bigger. The wall was mounted on cedar posts and it looked like a great plan for a small space. I did not see the part where the 'wall' was constructed, but boxes or rectangular pots attached to a cedar fence should serve the same purpose.

It seems to me that the soil would dry out too quickly in a hot climate like Texas to make growing veggies feasible, although it might work for some small herbs. You would probably need the moisture barrier to protect the fence and the drip irrigation on a timer set to come on a couple of times a day to keep the soil from going completely dry. Or you could grow vining crops along the fence as suggested above like pole beans, small melons, cucumbers and Malabar spinach.

Agreed. You can do it, but your limiting factor will be how many times you water those plants each day in the hot times.
