| All,
I have been trying to grow some garden vegetables including pumpkin. I plated the seeds about 2 months back and the plant grew like crazy...I was quite thrilled at the development. Lately I saw the yellow pumpkin flowers coming out...I even saw small pumpkin fruits developing but sadly I notice the small pumpkin does not grow past a large marble size and grows brown and eventually the fruit falls off (in about 7-10 days)... What can I do to prevent this fruit from dying out? please help. Thanks in advance. |

| Check to see if you have male and female flowers on the vine. The female flowers have the immature fruit behind them...if they aren't pollinated, the fruit turns brown and falls off. In general, vines produce female flowers before it begins to produce male ones, so it is possible you have one and not the other. It is also possible you have both but that you don't have the insect activity to pollinate the female flower. That is easily remedied...take a qtip (or even just your finger) and get some of the pollen from the male flower and transfer it to the center of the female flower. Good luck! |

| Thanks so much srBurk....your feedback makes perfect sense. That said, I have one more follow up question - How do you know which is a male and which is a female flower? Thanks in advamce |

| On most melons and squash, the female flower has a tiny immature "fruit" right under it. Male flowers don't. |
