I went to a seminar on oak wilt a couple of years ago and remember being told that cuts should be painted. In fact we were encouraged to paint wounds from branches that broke off in storms.

June 1st was given as the date after which it's okay to prune live oaks. As you said, summer is not as optimal as winter.

The presenter, who was a county extension agent, emphasized how important it is to plant other types of trees. That way if a neighborhood loses its live oaks to the disease, it's not left treeless. Plus, the disease spreads through the roots, too, so groves of live oaks are more at risk. Diversify!
