Have my fence and grow vines on it too.

Our last section of the original fence that came with the house is finally about to collapse. The problem is that I have 4 beautiful huge vines growing on it. I don't mind cutting them back and all, but hubby and I can't agree on what kind of fence to put up. I want a plain fence with lattice for the vines to grow on (like we have now) and he wants one that is much prettier with wood between the wrought iron to provide privacy. Problem is, when you attach lattice to something so pretty, you cover up the pretty. I've searched the internet for some sort of compromise, but came up empty handed. Do any of you have any excellent ideas? Thanks in advance!

Did the vine pull the fence down? I don't think I've ever seen a wood and wrought iron fence but I bet if you google it, you'll find lots of ideas.

My neighbor has a chain link fence and they have wisteria growing on it. This year, the fence started leaning. Luckily, this part of their fence backs up to my front yard so it's all theirs. But the wisteria totally covers the fence so it wouldn't matter what kind of fence is under it.

If it is just a wood fence, you could have solid fencing on bottom section for privacy, topped by a pretty section for looks. That would only work if your vine doesn't cover the top section.

Some neighbors are having a very beautiful fence installed that is wrought iron with upright boards between the vertical iron sections for privacy. If it's anything like the one you are considering -- as much as I like vines -- it would be a shame to cover it up.

If you have room how about a series of evenly spaced matching iron or wood towers placed out from the fence a few feet to grow the vines on? If lined up with the sections of fence the image would be very elegant I think. Of course you will have to move the roots of the vines while they are dormant.

I googled "attractive privacy fence" and this was one of the results. Makes me want a fence just to have this beauty! - June

A friend of my mom wanted to put up some privacy fencing with vines growing on it. She did something very similar to the pic I've attached except spaced out the fence sections with about 5 feet between them. I really liked the way it looked and need some privacy in my backyard as well but don't want to cover up our fence either. Spacing out the fence sections will allow you to have an added layer of privacy while also being able to still see and enjoy your new fence. So we might end up doing something along those lines ourselves.

No, Marti8a, the vines didn't pull the fence down. In fact, they may be the reason it is still standing. It was a cheap fence the builder put up and the other three sides have already been replaced. They didn't have vines on them!
