I have a 40-foot pecan tree down in the creek bed. Actually, it's about four or five feet above the present water line in the creek. I don't get pecans from it, but that's not big deal. That's why I never water it. It's just a nice tree. As of the last week or so, I have noticed that the tree has a number of small branches that are dead. Just big clumps of dead leaves hanging on the tree, mostly in the upper half. Maybe 10% of the tree. Other than those, the tree looks healthy. What's going on?

In the worst of the drought two years ago, the creek dried up, and several branches died. No big surprise. That was major stress. But this year, the water availability seems normal for the summer.

Is this just my pecan tree saying "Yeah, it's hot!", and just coping with that by selective die-back, or is it something worse? All the information I can find about heat-stress and pecans refers to nuts.
