What happened?

So, I got these two seed pods off of a hibiscus last fall, I sowed them indoors December and only one was viable, the rest having been eaten by weevils or something because they just crumbled if you crushed them between your fingers. I babied the one solitary plant all winter long under lights, planted it in good soil in spring and now finally it got these two buds just ready to open.

One flower is completely out but still closed and I wait and wait. Finally, I took a close look this evening and the flower is all brown and dry and the other pod has turned brown like some kind of mummy. There's other less mature buds down lower.

The plant looks healthy outside of a few grasshopper nibbles on the leaves so what happened? Has anyone ever had this?
