Pine tree stump, new tree?

We live in East Texas (7b) and purchased a home with a pine tree stump surrounded by azaleas in a formal bed. I would love to have the stump ground up and plant a live oak or maple that will provide beautiful colors in the fall. The area can support a large tree. I'm unsure how long ago or why the previous tree died. The stump is not rotting much and is about 2ft wide in diameter. Can I have the stump ground up and place a tree in the same area? If so, with what should I amend the soil? Any suggestions on type of trees that grow native to Texas. I'm a Louisiana girl and would love a live oak to go with my colonial style home, but I know it won't grow as large as I'm used to in south Louisiana. I would also prefer something that would tolerate our dryer summers.

Thanks for any suggestions!!
