After getting about only half a dozen tomatoes all season, my tomato plants are going nuts. I counted the green tomatoes and came up with an estimate of about 60 on one plant. Seriously. They are all green, though. Any chance I will get ripe ones before the first freeze? I can't remember the variety I planted, but I *think* they may be beef steak. I know I can use them green, but I would like some ripe ones.

One year I had the same situation as you when an unexpected early early cold front came through and I had to pick all of them. I stored them in a laundry basket with newspaper in between each layer and they ripened on their own. Wait though until a frost is on it's way before you pick them.

In cold weather, tomatoes take longer to ripen. So remove the tomatoes that are less than marble size, becuase they will not even come close to ripening before the first freeze. Also remove any flowers. This will allow all the plants energy to go into the bigger tomatoes.

Thanks for the suggestions. Sounds like I'll be doing some marble sized tomato and bloom removal. I wasn't sure if they would ripen if they were still completely green, but I'm willing to try when that frost is on the way.

Is it time to just give up on the ripening and pick what I have? I have many large green tomatoes with not even a hint of red beginning. Thanks. |

I would leave them until a freeze is predicted as long as the birds and critters aren't after them. I just found some yesterday that I plan to leave out as long as possible.

I am still harvesting tomatoes from ONE plant, a volunteer that I transplanted into the raised bed beneath the cucumber trellis. It is probably the largest tomato plant I have ever had, and has produced so many rather large cherry tomatoes. If there are green ones still on the plant when we are notified of the first frost or freeze, I will pick them and allow them to ripen in a cool dark place.
