Hi. I grow both naked lady lily and iris. Iris and naked lady can both take both full sun and some shade. Naked lady lily is a strange bloomer. Puts up strap-type leaves in spring, leaves then die back. In late summer (August usually) they produce a "naked" tall stem with 4-6 flower heads. They seem to bloom every other year. I've seen white, red and pink. While lovely, the pink flowers smell terrible so would advise not cutting for indoor display. Naked lady lily is a heritage plant meaning it's been around a long time. Divide about every 8-10 years.

Iris are really easy to grow. Three types that I know of grow in DFW area: bearded, dutch (tall and dwarf).. and Louisanna. Bearded and dutch are most common. Louisianna likes more swampy conditions. You probably have bare rhizomes (looks like a pale sweet potato) with roots and a partial "fan" of leaves. Plant about 1" deep with fan facing sun and softly cover with soil. Use bone meal either in the plant depression or scratch into soil after planting. New growth emerges in early spring. The French fleur-de-lis is the shape of iris bloom.

I have 3,000 iris in my yard. I am in the process of planting more and am doing it now. I am not far from Dallas.

Thanks for the input everyone! I'm excited about the iris. The Naked Lady lilies sound lovely but I've always loved purple iris! My in-laws own lakeside property and they have these gorgeous yellow irises that pop up in the spring. They were planted there by his great grandmother. I'm hoping whatever iris I plant will keep coming back!
