| Anyone ever grown a burr oak from an acorn? I've never seen one. I've heard the acorns are 50 cent size. Are the acorns that big? TIA, MP |

| I planted a burr oak acorn in 1999 on a piece of land that my brother owns in Venus Tx. It just so happens that I spent the day with him yesterday, the tree is now about 15' tall with a trunk diameter of about 10 inches. It hasn't made any acorns of it's own yet but I am sure it will. They are huge! The tree that bore the acorns that I planted must have been a couple of hundred years old. It's trunk is so big that two grown men couldn't reach all the way around it. It is still there today and I expect it will be for another hundred years. A wonderful tree. Billy |

| The squirrels plant the big Burr Oak acorns (from my larger tree) all over my place (southern Ellis county). Unfortunately, they plant a lot of them right next to other trees. I haven't tried digging them up yet, for I am afraid the roots of the big trees might be hurt by this. |

| Jolana, the tree is located north of the little town of Venus, Tx.(Johnson County) It is in the yard of an old abandoned farm house just north of cr.510 and just south cr.615 on cr.616. If you were traveling north on cr.616, you would cross a briidge that spans a small creek. As you cross the bridge, the old farm house is the first place on the right. The tree is close to the road and easy to spot. In fact, you can't miss it. Billy |

Suzzque, if you catch the seedlings before they get more than 10 or 12 inches tall, you can easily dig them up and replant them. They will not have extended their roots yet and more than likely you will find the young root still encapsulated in the acorn. Replant acorn and all. I have had good luck doing this many times. You wont hurt the big tree roots at all at this point....................................................... KOSSETX, send me an e-mail. I have 9 acorns on hand that are a couple of years old. I believe that they are still viable. The tree is located 80 miles from where I live now and I do not know when I will next get out that way. If you e-mail me your address, I will snail mail them to you. If they do not root for you, I may be able to get my brother to mail you some as he lives about 5 miles from the tree. Either way we can work something out. Billy |

| My DH plants the acorns from the Burr Oak every year, and he has some beautiful trees. His oldest are 5 years old, 12' tall, and produced their first crop of acorns this year. They are so easy to grow, and they are beautiful trees. Janie |

| I've picked up some acorns from various oaks in my 'hood if anyone is interested. One is a live oak, but I don't what the other two kinds are. I mention it here because one variety of acorn is crazy huge and furry! Might be your Burr. I've thought about planting them, but I don't have anywhere in my little lot in the 'burbs for another big tree! |

Hey Billy (muddauber) It looks like he is going to have plenty to plant or eat this yr. I sent about 25. I hope he can get some to live The last one I tried lasted about 3 yrs before the dry weather got it. princealbert |

| Yeah Prince, he ought to be able to plant a grove. hehe That tree does start out kinda slow but if you can keep healthy for 3 or 4 years it seems to really take off. In the prior post, I had said that the tree I planted 10 years ago had yet to bear acorns, it turns out that I was wrong. My brother said the tree has been putting out acorns for the last 3 yrs. and that this year was a bumper crop. He loves the tree but hates the acorns!... big smile here... because I have a huge black walnut tree that shades my house and a good part of my yard, but man, I tell you I HATE those darn black walnuts!!! A TERRIFIC tree with than one draw back. Happy Gardening.... Billy |
