This note can't tell you how they do in North Texas, but a few years ago, a friend and I both planted Chindo viburnums here in Austin and they did very poorly for us.

Our neighborhoods are 20+ miles apart, different soil and she's on the south end of town, but we had the same experience. Our plants looked OK for a few years. They would make some growth in warmer weather, and look promising in fall, but every cold snap/ice event left them practically collapsed on the ground. The branches died back so severely that after 2 rough winters in a row, the viburnums were smaller than when they were first planted, and finally dead.

I don't know if they'd like North Texas better!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm wondering if because the hedge would be protected by about 6 feet high fence from the North wind, if it would be as damaged as yours were? Were your viburnum sheltered at all? If so, I probably need to just go to plan B.

No - not against a fence to protect it from north wind. Maybe that will make a difference. Good luck with whatever you decide.
