Huisache Tree (Acacia)

I have seen these trees in the hill country here and there to the south where they are thicker. Well, I believe they are Cassia that keep getting thicker the further south you go.
So they should grow here in Bastrop Co., right? I really like their looks, are there problems with them.
If they aren't Acacia, what are they ?
Thanks

I think they grow anywhere. They grow here, Yorktown, the valley. Maybe not in East Texas and the piney woods. They like poor soil. Tally HO! |

They grow all over Fayette and Colorado counties. They are taking over my back pasture at my house. I've been fighting them for years. Deer spread them like wildfire. If you travel to La Grange, you will see them throughout the county. I think I remember seeing a pasture full outside of Smithville also. Kt

They grow in Austin, but I think that that is about as far north that they go. An occasion bad cold front every few years will kill them but not the ones in the protected spots. I had one by my house by Mopac and the river. It suffered some die back in a cold snap but survived.

I once worked with a girl that said she grew and ate huisache' for years. I finally realized, as did she, that the huisache that she ate, were actually called satsumas.......strange woman.

Living on Huisache street counts but Satsuma doesn't, lol I said Cassia above but meant Cassie, that is what someone I know calls them

My Mother had what she called a Huisache at the edge of the driveway in her back yard years ago. If it truly was a Huisache, then something dropping from it, sap or leaves I don't know, took the paint off the car. I was a kid at the time so I can't swear to it. I do know they took the tree out after having the car repainted.

Yes, Jo, she called satsumas, huisache. I brought some satsumas to work once to share with them, and she said, "Wow, look at all those huisache! I love to eat them but can never find them in stores or anyone who grows them." Well, I guess not if she was asking for huisache! Those thorns might be a bit hard on the gums... Kt

LOL -- I can empathize with that lady because I am always getting words down wrong. One foreign sounding word seems as good as another sometimes ... hahaha! Jolana, you were going to see a man about some Huisache trees last week. How did that go?

Hi sorry about not coming back earlier today!! But anyway I was not thinking clearly, Victoria meant or means hwy77!!!However since it was raining I could not get to the trees but tomorrow morning should stop raining, and so I will be able to get some and so I am planing on that. Then I will come here and post, and then we can arrange to meet at Bastrop Wallyworld. Unless you already got your tree, let me know tomorrow when I post back in here, the exchange will not take place till Sunday evening. Later M
