Late fall veggies

| I'm in 8b and in my experience, most of the fall veggies should have been in the ground by the last week of October. However, I have a large hoophouse so I'm still planting transplants like - kohlrabi, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, and salad greens. You should still be able to find transplants at local nurseries though. Our frost date is usually around mid-November. Leeks can be started indoors in a few weeks (around Thanksgiving) and broccoli can be started indoors around Xmas. Tomatoes - I usually seed them in December. It is a great time of year to plant shrubs and trees though! |

| Thank you for your reply. We planted six oak trees last fall. I have a lot of tomatoes I just brought in. Might do some broccoli later and look for stuff to transplant in the meantime. |

| You can plant lettuce and spinach (from seed or transplants) now. In a couple of weeks we'll plant and carrot seeds, garlic and onions. |

| Nice video on your SS peas, DFW. I put mine in in mid October, and they are also coming along well. They're 3-feet high, a bit shy of where yours are. This is my first year growing them in Texas. Looking forward to them. It's been many years since I've grown them anywhere. I've noticed a few things. Firstly, the growth rate does a big spurt as the plants get larger, or as the weather gets cooler. Secondly, they phototrope like crazy. If your trellis runs east-west, plant them on the north side of the trellis, or they'll be reaching in the wrong direction. You want them reaching for the trellis! Finally, I think they like a lot of (cool weather) sun. My trellises run west, outward from a brick wall. The plants closer to the wall are about 3/4 the size of those further out. Those plants nearer the wall, of course, get somewhat less sun. |
