Avocado Tree in San Antonio?

I know they *can* grow here, as there is one on the Riverwalk and another at Chris Park, but they're not so common. What special considerations do they need?

We're planning to get a fruit tree instead of a Christmas tree this year. It'll be indoors for awhile then, decorated, and eventually planted outside when the time is right. Our first choice is avocado. If that's not going to work, what's another good option?

We already have planted: 2 orange, 1 grapefruit, 1 peach, 1 fig. So preferably something different.

I would go with a Mexican type avocado, since they are more forgiving than the Guatamalan types or hybrids.

Here's a few other fruit trees that ought to work in San Antonio:

Pineapple Guava
Japanese Loquat (makes a mando pie!)
Strawberry Guava
Banana
Mango

Happy hunting!

Thanks! I do so lots of banana trees around, and our old house used to have one but we never got fruit. Mango is definitely appealing! Now, just to find an actual tree. I haven't seen many to buy.

You might want to check out Fanick's Garden Center in San Antonio. They list six varieties of avacados on their website.

Here is a link that might be useful: Fanick's Fruit, Nut and Citrus 2010 Brochure
