Advice on Boston Ferns

Hi all. My sister-in-law gave me 6 Boston Ferns and I was wondering if I could plant them in the ground under a tree here in zone 8? I read on the net that they only could be planted in zones 9-11. Has anyone planted this type of fern in their yard?

I did not plant mine in the yard, but did leave them in planters outside all last winter in San Antonio. They are in a protected, southwest side, against the house. The coldest night was in the high 20's and they were not covered. I saw no damage, but would definitely cover them if it gets colder.

I don't know about zone 8, but here in zone 9, they can be aggressive spreaders. I planted some in a bed and it spread throughout the bed via runners pretty quickly. It was in a dappled shade area so it was very happy there. The runners are simple to pull up but you have to be very vigilant and I wouldn't do it again!

If you have six, why don't you try it with one and see what happens. I wouldn't think they would live through the winter, unless you had the perfect micro climate situation going on.
