I am glad she made you post it, Kathy............it is truly beautiful, and it's name is Dr. Seuss. I lost mine of ten years after the 13 degree weather following the eighties last winter, but I had others from cuttings I had taken. I had two friends who came over today to cut all mine back. Now I am ready for whatever MN wants to throw at me.

And that's not all that was showing off in Kathy's yard! How about this 'Canyon Creek' Abelia?

But what is most striking about it right now are the whorls of pink sepals that hang on for weeks after the flower is through blooming. Kathy uses them in arrangements ...

I've wanted one for ages (I had rooted some cuttings, but they died) and after leaving Kathy's place I drove straight to Rainbow Garden on Bandera and bought one while they had their shrubs, and other plants, on sale at 25% off. They have one left ... :-)

What do you do to keep this plant in this condition. What does the soil look like, How much water do you give it and what kind of fertilizer , how much and how often? You do such an incredible job of raising these.

It gets water every Thursday, as that is our day to water. I do not fertilize it. If it freezes I prune it back. The soil is clay and I mulched it for several years, but I can no longer do that. It is at it's prettiest in late Oct.
When I planted the Canyon Creek Abelia I planted it 2 ft. from the curbing as the tag stated it got 3 to 4 feet around. It as gotten wider than that. it is one of my favorite purchases.
My housemate, Diane, will soon be moving in with her son and family. She has done all the pruning etc. these past 9 months as I can no longer get out in the garden. This spring Gina and her husband came and did some pruning for me.
I guess my garden is now on a sink or swim program.
