They will ripen in the house if you pick them. Bring them in and lay them upside down individually and not touching on some newspaper on the counter or some other spot you choose. They will taste more like the store bought tomatoes, but at least they won't go to waste.

Carrie lays newspaper on a counter in her pool house and lays the green tomatoes out to ripen. I it stays cool but doesn't freeze in there this time of the year.

I don't have that amount of counter space so I wrap each tomato in newspaper and stack them in a box. I place the box in the unheated garage. Check them in a few weeks and use those that are ripe, re wrap and put back those that aren't. Toss any that look bad.
You have to pick them before a heavy frost or freeze.

I will be picking mine today as it looks as if we will have a few mornings of light freezes.

I have done as Melvalena does for several years and it works beautifully. Have had garden tomatoes as late as Christmas.

I picked them all just now (there were dozens!) and put them in a window. I'll try to newspaper in a box method tomorrow.

One thing I remember reading about this is if the bottoms haven't changed color yet they probably won't ripen.

Baloney. I had ones that were all green and they ripened. I ate the last tomato in February one year. There is always fried green tomatoes.

I use the same method my grandfather did. I wrap them up each one separated in news paper. I put them in a cardboard box in my closet. I check them once a week. Once they break color I put them on the counter to ripen.

Cherry tomatoes I put them in a bowl. Most ripen in about 1 to 3 weeks on the counter.

If you do home canning the small green cherry tomatoes make awesome pickles.
