Odd hard brown crumbly things in compost?

Hi, all! New to this forum, glad to be here.

We garden using a Garden Tower (see gardentowerproject.com) which uses vermicomposting at its center. We know our compost is off. We're in the process of re-booting...and in taking out some samples of our compost to see what's up, we see there are still a few worms in there (in the summer, we had maggots)...but also these small (the size of a grain of kosher salt?) brown hard things, that crumble to dust when you squish them with a fingernail. We're pretty sure they're not supposed to be there, but are stymied as to what they are.

Any clues? Also, anyone else using a Garden Tower, or is there a forum here for that somewhere?

Happy Holidays!
