Five different zones cover this stateÂwhere exactly in NYS do you live? No one can answer your question without that info, nor can you without a good thermometer that records a winterÂs lowest temperatures on the north side of your house.

A very large map is available from the USDA for just a coupla bucks. Check their site. There is no acceptably detailed map on the web. [Note: the USDA map shows my corner of the Catskills to be in zone 5b. My three thermometers have recorded lows of of minus 18° (5a), so individual microclimates play a big role, and the map is not gospel.

I posted a pictorial zone map a little further down that has the zones broken down from 3b to 7a showing which counties are in which zone. There is also a link to the page where you can go and enlarge the map to see a bigger version of it and then you can save it to your own computer for future reference.

I just went and checked the map on my post and most of Wayne Co. in in zone 6b but about a third is in zone 5a. check the map to see where your town is and you will know exactly what your zone is. here is a link to my post
