Local Gardening Supply Stores

I used to love going to the Agway in Camillus. It went out of business a couple of years ago. Are there any local gardening shops in the Auburn - Syracuse area anymore? The supplies at the bigger main chains (Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc.) seem rather limited.

I also know there are a number of good catalogs for gardening supplies (seeds and seed starting supplies). However, I had a bad experience with a reputable one a couple of years ago. By the time I got my plants and seeds it was mid-June. Half the plants arrived dead. It was too late in the season to try and buy plants locally and too late to start some from seeds. So I like to try and buy everything (seeds, seed starting materials, fungicides, fertilizers, bug control...) all locally. I like to try and keep things organic but am not opposed to other means.

i have my favorite local nurseries, but they are around our house in columbia county. i am very much opposed to supporting the business practices of big-box stores, and avoid them. honestly, i have much better experiences at the local nurseries, which have vastly more knowledgeable staff --- most of whom garden locally, so have first-hand advice.

I get some items from Tractor Supply (Auburn, Clay, Dewitt) and Country Max (Dewitt/East Syracuse Area).

Chuck Hafner in Liverpool is wonderful and they are supposed to be opening a huge new greenhouse this year. I also like Balentyne Gardens in Liverpool, the specialize in pond plants as well.

I've heard that Dickman Farms in Auburn is nice, but I've never been there. They have a website too.

If you'd like to take a drive, Ontario Orchards in Oswego is a wonderful place and they usually have a huge 1/2 price sale on Father's Day weekend.

Thanks! I forgot about Dickman's and the Tractor Supply store. I have not bought garden supplies from either, but have heard good things about both. I haven't been to Chuck Hafner's in years (since I switched jobs - my old office was closer) but I'll have to give them a try again too.

I do like going to the Regional Market when they open to get plants.

I love the Regional Market too....I bought many perennials and annuals from them this past year and was amazed at the quality and great prices. I already told DH he had to make sure he had the Saturday off of Memorial Day weekend so he could help me carry plants...LOL. Shame on me for not mentioning them. :)
