Straw?

Posted by schubbard z6 NY (My Page) on

I'm looking for a source for a few of bales of clean straw to mulch my (veggy) garden paths this year. I've avoided it in the past, because I've been concerned about weed seeds, mice, mold, etc. However, last year was a disaster, and I've got to try somethng different. I'm going to tack down the black garden cloth, but I also want to cover it ith something "squishy" to reduce compaction. Any ideas for where to find clean straw? or where to avoid?

Thanks,
Sue

RE: Straw?

I suggest wood chips for paths, not straw. They last several years, don't blow away, don't have weed seeds, not so easy for critters to nest in it. And it's cheap. For $20 I get a full-size pickup bed overflowing with it from Amherst compost facility.

If you want to mulch your garden, and not your paths, I suggest getting compost, also from Amherst. Attached is a link.

Do not confuse straw and hay. Straw is much better than hay, hay is full of weed seeds.

Here is a link that might be useful: amherst compost facility
