Privet Hedges

Does anyone have experience with a good hedge for a 1/3 to 3/4 shady border run along my property? I'm thinking privet, but still not sure. Border around 120 ft along my lawn/garden on one side, woods on the other, running into full woods at the end but still with some limited sun.

I'd like eventually to have something, green, dense, at least 12' and I'm not really bothered in this instance about a perfect, groomed look. Wild and bushy is fine - so long as it's dense... I'd just rather not spend a fortune or wait too long. Maybe something that would grow up somewhat in three years?

Any comments really appreciated...

With the woods, why do you think you need a hedge?

You will not get quick, dense growth in the shade of a woods. The lack of light will cause slow and open growth. You will not get anything to grow to 12' in 3 years, especially on a budget.

Privet will do well in the sunnier bits, but not too well in deep shade. For cheap and fast (but not dense or pretty) you could use willow.

How about a fence?
