Crabapple tree decision time.........

Howdy-

I moved into a house built in 1965. I've already had a mature white pine taken down in the front yard, as it was on its last legs. When I counted the rings (40), I was able to deduce that the tree was planted very close to when the house was built.

My next decision involves a mature crabapple tree that is probably just as old. The previous owner has told me that it produces normal leaves and flowers, after which all the leaves fall off. I'm thinking "fungus", and wonder if I should bother saving it, or just cut it up and burn it. Ideas?

TIA

Marcus
