There are threads about planting hostas in pots in the Hosta forum. It is important to prevent water on top of the roots / crowns during winter, or they will rot. Therefore, pots with hostas are placed on their side in a shady spot over winter, if you want to keep them outside. Some perennials, such as hostas need to be very cold over winter, therefore keeping them in the house is not an option, but a cold garage would be OK.
