Creating an arch.. with vines?

I've seen and admired some lovely arches at people's entryways at various spots: front doors, garden entries, etc. Does anyone have information about how to construct these? I'm thinking maybe grape vines, maybe willow... would love to hear your ideas. Will also search online, of course, but thought locals might know of what's readily available around here.

Carolyn, I am not sure but I would think that you would have to have a solid framework of somesort in order for them to hold their s shape.

I agree with Penny. I believe most of these arches are wrought iron or some other kind of metal. They have some pretty inexpensive ones at Big Lots and other discount stores around town.

I recommend a book called "Making Bentwood Trellises, Arbors, Gates, and Fences" by Jim Long. You can order it from Amazon (or probably from a local book store, if you prefer).

He does not recommend grapevine (doesn't last very long), but willow would be good. I have a number of trellises and an arch that I have built primarily from ash saplings, because they were easily available (and needed to be thinned out from our woods).
