Flowers to sow in July/bloom in the fall

ontogeny

Here's the situation. I'm moving into a house with a garden in August, but I'll have access to the yard starting in July. I was wondering if there is anything that I can plant that late in the season that will still bloom this year. I could also get started in containers, but I'm doing all my veggies in containers so I'm rapidly running out of space in my current apartment.

The space where I'll be planting is about 8'X10', and gets plenty of sun from the west and south. It's in front of a ground level window, so I want 2-3 ft plants at max (although there's room around the perimeter for things that will grow higher).

I've only grown vegetables before (and that was in California), so any advice would be appreciated.
