Mountain Laural-sun or shade

Every other planting instructions I find on the web claim either sun or shade. Which is it?

I see wild mountain laurel in the woods where the sun peeks through and along the edges. My sister (northern NJ-probably zone 5-6) has one in her back yard that is full on the sunnier side but just bones in the full shade. This is pretty much how they grow in the wild, the sun side is full, and shade side just branches.

The plant came with 2 tags, one with full sun instructions and another tag that claims part shade. Tags are apt to get mixed up, so I'm not sure if the one tagged on the plant (part shade) is as reliable as the one attached firmly to the pot (full sun).

I have a spot I was going to put it in full sun in the front with the hopes it would become a single specimen bush, but can also plant it in part shade in the back. I love Mountain Laurel and would like to start it off in the correct spot as they don't propagate easily and I don't think they enjoy transplanting.

Anyone in the Southern Tier of NY growing Mountain Laurel?
