installing a wood duck nesting box

bloomville

Hi all,

Each year, starting in late summer, groupings of wood ducks (male and female) appear on my pond, which is an old farm pond that we've left to the wildlife.

Last year, I purchased a wood duck box and I am trying to figure out how to install it in the pond. I bought a post to hang it on and the company I got the wood duck box from also sold me a kind of corkscrew metal piece to affix to the bottom of the post, presumably to aid with securing the post in the ground.

The thing is, the pond is totally rocky at the bottom. I can't figure out how to excavate a decent hole in the pond for the duck box. I could just dig a regular hole near the pond, but my understanding is that predatory risks to the nest box will be greatly reduced if the box is put in a post in the pond.

Is there any way to manage this project by hand? I don't have a tractor or other large equipment. Any suggestions regarding technique/approaches would be most welcomed.

Thanks in advance.
