Watermelon plants

I just got 4 Crimson Sweet watermelon plants from our local Agway. I've tried to visualize how to plant them, but thought maybe I'd get some info from more local folks. One year we grew some great ones from seed, the next year was lousy. Must've been varying microclimates etc.

Do I plant them on hills?

How far apart for PLANTS (one place says 3 feet, the other says 6 feet!)

Ed Hume seed website recommends planting them on a south or west facing wall to maximize heat...as well as putting black plastic at the base of the plants, or a tire around each plant for the same reason. Does anyone here do that?

How many watermelon should I expect per plant? Somewhere I read that I should only let 3 develop per plant for best flavor.
