| Anyone aware of any towns or cities in upstate (I'm originally from Norwich, Chenango County) planting disease resistant american elms (i.e., Princeton, Valley Forge, New Harmony, Jefferson)? Here in New England, many garden clubs are involved in civic projects which involve setting up nurseries for elm saplings and after a few years when they're 6 or so feet, setting them around town.
In Norwich, someome ordered Liberty elms, 6 or 8 of which have succumbed to ded. Disease pressure in this part of NYS is through the stratosphere. |

the Town of Amherst, NY lists "Elm Varieties" on its list of several trees for street planting. The town's trees were decimated in October 2006 with an early season (October 12) snowfall that killed and damaged thousands of trees when the leaf-laden and sap-filled branches couldn't support the weight of the snow. http://www.amherst.ny.us/news/news_compound.asp?compound=pro02 I have no idea what varieties they are selecting. |
