Oak trees in the Adirondacks???

While swimming in Lake George the other day I found an acorn floating in the water. I took it home with me and went on the net to find out what variety of oak it could have come from but with not much luck. The acorn size is smaller than what one would normally see in the south. It's about the size of a hazelnut but definetly an acorn. I didn't even know that oaks could grow in such cold climates. Anyway I'm curious if anyone would know what variety of oak this could be? The closest I could get to a match is the red or white oak, but I could be wrong. Also, does anyone know how to plant acorns to grow a tree?
