DAYLILIES--Please..a stupid answer to my stupid question??

First, let me introduce myself. I'm relatively new to gardening, and live in upstate NY. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I've become "bulb crazy," (LOL), and have had good luck.

The garden is a work in progress, and I'd love to add more bulbs (I do fill in with a few annuals) for summer blossoms. I noticed what looked like late-blooming daffs througout our area, and thought they'd be a nice addition. With a little research, however, I've discovered that they're yellow daylilies. I have just the spot for them, but have a couple of questions:

These flowers appear to re-bloom and a number of them seem to emerge from a single, neat mound--do you get this from a single bulb?

Also, the planting season for our area is "April-May." Since I planted spring flower bulbs in the fall (again, I'm a novice), would I really plant daylily bulbs in April or May and then expect to see flowers just a month or so later? Seems like they wouldn't have enough time to become established.

Daylilies don't grow from bulbs. I believe they grow from tubers. Some people in the forums group them with bulbs. I think you can plant them just about any time. I think most stores sell them in late spring for spring planting. If you plant in April or May you may not see blooms that year. You may not see blooms the following year. Depends on the plant -what quality the root, how much readjustment to your growing conditions, etc..
Do you know the name of the variety you're interested in? There seem to be thousands of different daylily varieties. Sounds like you are talking about Stella D'Oro. They are common and tend to grow in a thick clump and will send out lots of blooms.

You should be able to find them blooming at garden centers in pots ready to go into the ground.

Thanks for your help. And, yes, Stella D'Oro was the variety. I like even the taller varieties, but not for the area I had in mind.

Hi, I was just at Home Depot in Albany yesterday, and they had TONS on clearance for $3 a peice (potted with spent flowers, but otherwise healthy.) Just thought I would throw it out there.

Hi! Just a quick note on planting times for daylilies..I have had a lot of luck with planting in the Fall also; it's a great time to get good deals at the garden centers, and also works out well when I need to divide and transplant, as I'm not so busy as in the Spring! Just do the usual cutting-back of the foliage, and be sure they get enough moisture before the ground freezes. The plants should be well-established by Spring, and you should get flowers, depending on the size of the scape. I have ordered online with success, but my favorite place to visit locally (I live between Rochester and Buffalo)is a place in Shelby called Cottage Gardens. They have a website also; just Google them..Happy gardening!
