Moving to Capital Region

We're going to be moving to the Capital Region in the next couple of months and I want to take some of my plants. We're going to be looking into Voorheesville, or Guilderland which I believe are zone 5. I have tons of hydrangeas and peonies in my garden that I cannot leave without. I know the peonies should do just fine in the new environment, and will probably enjoy less sandy soil, but I'm concered about my hydrangeas.

The ones that are hardy to zone 5 (climbing hydrangea, oakleaf, etc.) I would like to take. Just wondering does anyone who gardens in upstate NY successfully grow hydrangeas? Have you experimented with ones that are only hardy to zones higher than 5? Do they bloom? Do you need to take a lot of protective measures to ensure blooms?

As I said, I'd really like to take a lot of my plants, but not if they're going to end up in teh compost bin. Thanks for any input!

Welcome to the the Capital District and this forum.
Climbing , oakleaf , pee gee , Annabelle and many others are hardy here and I don;t give any special care. I have a hydrangea taken from an aunts garden in Southampton LI and have not gotten blooms on it . It has been in several years and grows well but no flowers. I have now moved it to another location but suspect it doesn't have a long enough period of warmth here for it to bloom.
When you are in the Voorheesville area be sure to check out the demonstration gardens around the Albany County Cooperative Extension Office there. Also that office can give you further info on plants that will survive here and answer any other gardening questions that may arise. Kareen

Welcome to New York! I grow Nikko Blue, Pink Diamond, Blue Billow and Oak Leaf Hydrangeas. Oh yeah, and climbing hydrangea too. Just got an Endless Summer to try as well. I don't do anything special to these varieties. I know some are less hardy and need a warmer zone than 5.

Thank you for the responses! I just finished digging up my climbers and oakleafs. I'm taking one mophead, a Brestenburg I believe. Its only hardy to zone 6, but I'm going to give it a shot. Thanks for the tip about the Cooperative Extension Office.

You may have an area of your yard that has a warmer microclimate....thats where I would plant the questionable one. Also I find planting things near rock walls, foundations or large rock also helps keep it warmer than out in the open. Please keep us posted on your arrival and the happenings in your new garden.
