Help, I've got Hibiscus acetosella taking over the front steps. What started out as an innocent-looking foot high plant at the botanical gardens plant sale labeled 'hibiscus' is taking over, standing a staggering 5' tall already and threatening all who pass. And there's no sign of a bloom yet.
I swear the mailman thinks I am growing a japanese maple tree on my steps. Either that or some red leafed pot. :)
Anyone ever grow these monsters, and if so when do they bloom?
I've repotted it three times already this season and it probably needs it again, but I don't want to lose bloom, assuming it ever does for me.
Also, when is a good time to prune it back? it's getting a wee bit tall, outstripping the tropical hibiscus on my back patio (which I thought this was but with red leaves, based on the limited tag info...), and tips over as soon as it's the least bit dry. Which is often, since it is bordering on needing a bigger pot again.
Anyone got experience with this thing upstate? Thanks.
A picture might be found here of the same type plant:
