I just have a small preformed pond (Sam's Club) probably not more than 150 gallons...I got most of my info from the pond forum...have had just plain old goldfish that have survived three winters here with just an airstone going...you many need however to pour a cup of hot water on it when the pond freezes solid...lurk and surf on the pond forum they have a wealth of info.

I only have a small back garden which means I can only install a very small pond. I want it primarily for the birds & critters. I will do as you suggest and lurk over in the ponds forum

I don't know about ponds since I am just going to be making a fountain of sorts from an old washtub but I do know that there are heaters that can be used in bird baths to keep the water from freezing. This may also work for a small pond.

I had great success last winter with a de-icer, just like Penny suggested. My fish even survived the cold and snowy months.
