Animal question

I have had to take my sick dog out on a leash for a few nights. I keep hearing something screaming a sound that sounds like the word AARF-as in the dog says aarf aarf.

Anyone know what it might be? There are at least 2 of them cause the sound is in two different directions, like they are talking to each other. Gives me the willies...

Could be foxes ... I wondered about a sound I heard too a couple of years ago and googled foxes and found a site that had audio fox calls. I was amazed...

Or coyotes ...
