When do nurseries start their clearance sales? It's different for every one. So it might be helpful if people on this forum post when they find a good clearance sale at a local nursery, so we can all run out and get more plants that we don't need ;-)

Hoping to hear from you!

Not sure about the nurseries, but I know my local HD has perennials 25% off right now.

Most nurseries hold their stock over for the next year ... no sales.

Obviously the "big box" stores can't hold their stock over, though I can't imagine what it looks like by now.

You'll find some interesting things at the Fall Garden Faire in East Aurora this Saturday the 9th at the Cornell Cooperative Ext.

I went to Home Depot in Rome, NY yesterday. They had only 4 one gallon perennials on clearance: 1 green fern and 3 lilies--all looked terrible. They also had some English Ivy for 50 cents each.

But--they had lots and lots of annuals on sale, lol.

I also went to Lowes in Rome as well. Nothing on sale there at all really.

I got my best deals at Price Chopper. Got 2 Amethyst Mist Coral Bells and a Jacob's Ladder, Stairway to Heaven in one gallon pots. They were on sale for $6.46 each, but each had a $5.00 off sticker. So I paid $1.46 for each.

Also bought several Labrador Violets and a few Bloody Sorrell's there for 99 cents each.

Adams nurseries in Lancaster has buy1-get 1 free on perennials. I got agastache Tutti-Frutti and gaillardia oranges and lemons, and others.

Pudgies in Batavia has 50% off all trees, shrubs, and perennials. They have a nice selection of Japanese maples that are now $25 and healthy and good sized.

    Just starting . . . .

Great, now I have to go to Adam!

Not sure if there's anything left but last month HA Treichler in Sanborn had buy one get one free. They're only $8 a gallon when they're not on sale. I got japanese anemone, baptisia australis, mountain bluet, and lupine 'the governor' - died already. It was a beauty when I got it. This is the third time I killed the 'governor'. I give up!

Lowes in Vestal has gallon perennials for $3 (or maybe it was $3.33). If you dig through you can find some good ones. I got Meadow Sage, Scabosia butterfly blue, Penstemon, Japanese Variegated Spurge, Ferns, and Hosta (not many choices of hostas).

There's a little garden center in Vestal on Front St. He has perennials 50% off. I haven't stopped there yet.

I was at a local nursery (george's in Kirkland) and saw lots and lots more really nice huge fall mums and asters. But no bargains at all. I went there hoping maybe to get something cheap. I asked if they had anything left from summer and the man said, "we don't sell our spring and summer plants at years end. We hold them in the greenhouse for next year. You see we have the best plants." And I don't see why they should do it really. I know they stopped selling their roses at August 1. Most nurseries spend the off season dividing or repotting their stuff, etc. If there are bargains its usually the sickly plants. After 25 years at this I find that with flowers you get what you pay for. I did get some more Tulips (160) at Lowes, 40 for $7. A local grower has some Oriental Lilies (bring your own shovel and bucket)at 10 for $2,dig your own from the field, pot luck colors.I dug up 100. Wonder what colors I got? A place a little south of Geneva, Ny has dig your own IRISES at "ANY SIZED CLUMP FOR $5". A real deal if you get a clump with 20 rhyzomes. I took one with 5 rhyzomes and he asked why I took the small clump. Not sure what road thats on but I can drive there. Lets see if you're headed south in downtown Geneva turn right at the light then a quick left, go 4-5 miles, go right on a back road 1 mile or so then first left and go 2 miles. Its way way out in nowhere land. A friend took me there but i been there a few times. Its an Iris farm. Colors are not marked. You can go there any month so I go in late may when they are in bloom. The price is a year round price. I believe he is an Amish farmer. Home Depot is selling mums at $1 marked fall mums but I'm 100%possitive they are garden mums not fall mums. But I really don't need any more Lilies I have thousands now.

Just a FYI on the Agastache 'Tutti Frutti'. Either take it inside for the winter or plant it in a very protected area or take cuttings now to root for next year as it probably won't survive the winter planting it this late. Agastaches need 3 months to get established in the garden up here. They have to develop a very deep and strong root systems or they won't survive our winters. My first tutti frutti was planted out the first of Sept. 2 years ago. The roots never had a chance to spread and go deep into the soil before it was killed off by a frost in November.

Thanks for the warning on agastache. I will look up how to take cuttings, because I love that plant!
