I simply move my potted ones into my enclosed porch area.
Come spring I take clippings and start new plants for what I think I may need that year.

Just pot up one of each color that you want and take cuttings next spring. Unless it's super super mild this winter, they won't make it in the ground.

In the past I have just put the pots in the basement and ignored them until spring. The start growing usually before I ever bring them outside. I don't have a basement in this house so I can't do that now.
