Question for those of you who attended Garden Frogs Swap

For those of you who attended Garden Frog's Swap in June and got one of my Salvia Black & Blue seedlings could you tell me what color your flower turned out to be. I would like to know if anyone ended up with a red flowering guaranitica. I had one of mine this year turn out to be red (which is not a bad thing). It seems that the red ones are not necessarily hybrids but a 'new' form of guaranitica according to a salvia breeder that I know.

Here is a picture of my red guaranitica just after it started blooming. My hummers have used it as much as they have used the Black & Blue and more than any of my Salvia coccineas.

I got one from you . . . and it hasn't bloomed yet! It's a big healthy plant, and is just getting buds, so in a couple of weeks I can tell you what color it came out.

I believe that is what I have. It was the only plant I lost the name to, but it has bloomed for awhile now and is a beautiful purple. I love the color.

Are the calyxes (the part that holds the flower) black or nearly black? If so then you have one of the guaraniticas that came true to the parent plant.

Mine is blooming now and gorgeous black and blue. Any chance it will overwinter with lots of mulch? It is so pretty, I'd like to have it next year. SHould I take cuttings or seed?

I am so glad that yours bloomed.
Yes with LOTS of mulch and protection it will overwinter. I also start cuttings now and collect seed all season as extra insurance. The seeds may or may not come true as you can see by my picture at the beginning of this post. THis year I have 7 that came true, 5 that have red flowers and dark calyxes and one that came out with lavender flowers. The red flowering B&B was just as popular with the hummers as the true B&B but the Lavender flowered B&B was hidden behind a much taller coral nymph so I don't know if it was used or not.
