Yellow Berry-Like tree in Ithaca

Hi,

I used to live in Ithaca and remember this supposedly rare tree that grows yellow berries with a very strong odor. My friends and I affectionately referred to it as the poo-berry tree because of the corresponding smell. I remember someone telling me that these trees were in fact the sole remaining species of some prehistoric genus. Does anyone have any clue what tree I'm talking about? I'm pretty sure there was one on N. Quarry between Seneca and Buffalo (that has since been removed) and there is another one further down the hill on Seneca near Sage Place. Thanks for the help! I'm most interested in this tree's story, so if you got that it'd be even better than just the name.

Sincerely

Jackob
