Fizzling Flowers of Fall

Well it's that time of year. Many of the annuals (and perennials) are looking sad. That's okay. They did their job.

One that's looking great now though is the orange cosmos. I planted some seeds this spring in my little pumpkin garden. I knew from past experience that they wouldn't bloom until late. Which was a tad annoying in July, when everything else was looking so great, but now that it's September and they are blooming like crazy I'm loving them. They look so fresh while almost everything else is looking old or autumnal.

Anything in your garden that grabs your attention this time of year?

i love the orange! hope your saving the seeds.the brown eye susans are doing great.

My hummingbird plants....Salvia guaranitica, Salvia coccineas, Phlox paniculata, honeysuckle vines, Swamp milkweek, Cannas, Agastache rupestris and Tutti Frutti and pringlei are all still going great guns and to add to the mix Salvia azurea has started blooming. Penstemon barbatus coccineus is just now slowing down and they have been blooming since spring.

Yes, I'm saving seed. I bought the seeds because I never see the orange cosmos as plants in the garden centers around here. Worked out well.

Penny - I've seen you post about salvia guaranitica (black and blue?) before. Where do you get the plants/seeds? A local nursery had a nice annual blue salvia last year but couldn't get any this year.

Phlox, Hydrangeas, Althea, Hibiscus and Morning Glories do the job this time of year for me, and the asters and goldenrod are coming along. There are still lots of other things putting out a few flowers, and the foliage plants look great - a couple of Rex Begonias, Black and Chartreuse Sweet Potato Vine and Coleus.
