Do fall showers = May flowers?

I am hoping that all this rain and the moderate temperatures will fortify my plants for next year's performance. There has to be an up side to the prolonged grey rainy spell we've had! Some years by now we've had multiple hard frosts, but so far I haven't had any at all down by the Susquehanna River in the Southern Tier. I planted quite a few daylilies and peonies in September and October, and I hope they get a good foothold before winter. Has anyone noticed a correllation between fall weather and spring performance, or am I having a fit of wishful thinking and high hopes (not to mention rationalization to deal with the extended BLAH weather)?
