unidentified black, thorny seed pods

Our 5-year-old friend, Leo, found seed pods, and we can't find what they are in any reference we have (or on the web). Does anyone recognize them?
They are hard shelled, very dark gray, and have four thorns. The widest dimension, from tip of thorn to tip of thorn is 1.5 inches. If those two thorns were pointing east-west, the two thorns above point north-south and are 1.25 inches from point to point. The entire seed pod is about 1 inch deep.

Leave it to a five-year-old to find something fascinating, that a 55+ year old has never seen before... :-)

thanks for any help!
I have an picture if you'd like me to send it.

maybe it's nigella, love-in-a-mist seed pods?

Now I'm curious too, have you found an answer?

I've always had good luck with the "name that plant" forum, especially if you have a photo.

Here is a link that might be useful: name that plant

I don't know if you guys have ever gotten a response to this, but that's a water chestnut seed.

They were my favourite part about growing up near the lighthouse in Saugerties. =)
