getting perennials ready for winter

I live in the Binghamton area, and this summer I planted a disco belle hibiscus and an aster frikarti. I'm wondering if these need to be covered with an extra thick mulch layer for the winter or just left alone.

RE: getting perennials ready for winter

Assuming you are zone 5 in Binghamton, They should be fine and not need any extra mulch, they're pretty hardy.
