You may want to check out Nourse Farms in Whatley, Mass. They specialize in strawberries, raspberries, currants and gooseberries and they can probably tell you which are the most flavorful berries. I am trying red currants this year from cuttings I received from Washington state.

A couple of years ago, we ran into a bunch of currant and gooseberry growers at a farmer's market outside of Hudson. The link below is to the Gardenweb entry for the organization. I'd email Steve McKay, and ask his advice. If nothing else, he may be able to point you to more local information.

BTW, I have an English friend who says that all American gooseberries are tasteless.

Thanks. I'll check out all the sources. Many years ago when I lived down south in Orange County, I had a row of gooseberries that I thought were pretty tasty, though I have no idea what variety they were.

I have two varieties of gooseberries and two of red currants that I got many years ago (at least 12) from Millers in Cananadaigua. They are fantastic...and tasty. Some years I don't bother to pick them and leave them for the birds, who go crazy for them, even dried on the bush. Gooseberries make such excellent jam (sigh!)
